Artist Interview: Jacob Utley

Who are you and how long have you been an artist?
My name is Jacob Utley and I’ve been an artist since childhood.

What medium(s) do you work in & why?
I use markers for everything because markers are cool. I use both paint markers (POSCA, Montana, Molotow) and inky markers (Sharpie, Copic).

For shows, I generally work on canvas board, but most flat and hard surfaces work.

What is your creative process like?
There really is none. I just sit down and draw.

What is the best art-related advice you’ve received?
I don’t think I’ve ever received actual advice that’s helped me. I just like to doodle.

What is the biggest challenge you face as an artist?
Probably the supplies. Stuff is expensive.

Choose one piece that you currently have on display at Artomatic and tell the story of that piece.
My friend from high school would wear her hair in a topknot a lot and I doodled this one day and thought that it would look good in a show.
