Call For Artists: Ninety-Day Paid Residencies for Installation Art in Vacant Alexandria Properties

CALL FOR ARTISTS – $2,500-$5,000 PER PROJECT – DEADLINE DECEMBER 11, 2015:  Ten artists or groups will be selected to create installation work over the course of approximately ninety days within vacant, commercial properties throughout Alexandria, VA. The “smART Space Program” is a project of the Office of the Arts for the Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities Department of Alexandria, in collaboration with ReCreative Spaces.

Installation art is used in the broadest sense, and the project focus is innovative, compelling, and community-inclusive work. All mediums, styles, and collaborations, including those not necessarily associated with installation art will be considered. Groups, as well as individuals, are encouraged to submit proposals. The deadline for submissions is Friday, December 11, and selected artists will be notified by December 21 with work to begin in early 2016. There is no fee to submit.

Selected artists will receive a commission of $2,500-$5,000 per project, paid in installments, depending on the size, scale, and scope of the work. Selected artists will be expected to be present onsite for a minimum of 10 hours weekly, so that the public may view the space and work in progress. Selected artists are also expected to use the entire 90 days to create their work. This program is as much about the process as it is the final product.
