With both my silk tissue prints and wax panels, I exploit their inherent translucency as I work both front and back of the paper and the panels--and the bleeding through from one side to the other is important in both processes. This is underpainting, almost a pentimento of light. I work both sides (of paper and of wax) aggressively, and when the face of one side shows through to the other, the muting of the reverse shines through the vigor of the verso. On one side, objects can be seen clearly—on the other side, they are occluded, as in memory.

Anita Kernacs is a self taught multi-media artist, born in Hungary, with years of travel all over Europe; finding her permanent residence in Washington D.C. Anita feels very much at home in the corporate environment, referring to herself as a “laptop-Blackberry-Bluetooth loving, always on the go and getting every job done type of workaholic” who thrives in the fast-paced world of luxury building management and community revitalization / development.

Anita describes her discovery of her creativity as serendipitous. While living proximate to the U Street corridor, in the early 2000’s, she was surrounded by remnants of demolished old row homes resultant from the redevelopment of DC neighborhoods. Her fascination and appreciation of the architectural designs, construction methods and materials, and the durability of the construction of yesteryear motivated Anita to explore the old sites and to collect interesting materials to memorialize the past and give new life to the old pieces. Her interest developed into a passionate calling enabling her to create abstract, multi-media works that enchant with a unique juxtaposition of geometric shapes, exotic colors and very rich texture.

At my display you will see original, artistic, wooden jigsaw puzzles. Most people say they have never seen anything like them. Hope to see you soon.

The DC Shorts Film Festival (September 10-17, 2009) turns the spotlight on truly independent short films, created by new and established filmmakers in an era when the art of filmmaking is opening to all. We select films of every genre and niche for our competition screenings — with a special focus on films created by metropolitan Washington, DC-based directors and writers. After each screening, filmmakers have the opportunity to speak to the audience as part of a moderated panel.

Dawn light seems mystical the way it paints a landscape with pastel colors. The colors constantly change as dawn moves to sunrise. Around Black Point, where I have lived the past 13 years, the small lagoons reflect the light and enhance the colors. Maybe 20 minutes then it is over.
One neighbor once said to me, “You make Black Point look prettier than it is.” Well, that’s not quite true. I just capture it at its most picturesque moments.
Evening sunset and dusk is another favorite time for me in Black Point with its light growing more prismatic as sunset moves to dusk. I have hiked this small area for all these years observing how the change in water levels and season alters the effect of sunrise and sunset. I constantly look for new angles from which to take a Black Point picture.
Point Reyes is a favorite area of mine as well with its seashore and ocean waves. The light reflections are marvelous and the dark rocks, light sand, and white ocean foam beg for black and white photography.
For both Black Point and Point Reyes I always feel that there is another photograph that needs to be taken.

As an amateur photographer my goal is to capture and showcase the National Capital regions natural beauty, the diversity of its populace, the many annual festivals/sporting events, as well as the architectural splendor in our midst. In doing so, I hope to elevate the viewer to a greater appreciation of what surrounds us daily.

My exhibit has a lil bit of my crazy personality on a canvas. My artwork has always been something I've turned to in order to tune everything out. Growing up I've had a fair share of odd imaginations..actually I still do. I've always loved mixing colors together and figuring out which color pairs well with another. My pieces has been my sanity expressed through my paint brushes.

I work in waves: both electromagnetic and acoustic.

This set of pieces explores the smooth transition zones between pitch and its slower sibling, rhythm. Frequencies are real and measurable -- the dividing line between tones and beats exists only between the ears of the audience.

All of these pieces are built around feedback loops that incorporate the viewer/listener into the work. In some works the audience's involvement is obvious, even solicited. (Art is meaningless without its audience, right? These pieces wear that interdependence on their sleeves.) Other times, the observer is an unknowing participant.

Some of the work is robotic, while some is simply electronic. Some bits could have been more easily realized using heavy-duty computers, but how much fun is that? Instead, the formula is an economy of algorithms plus a richness of inputs, with the result drifting between chaos and coherence, pitch and rhythm.

Enjoy.
