Gregory Ferrand is a native Washingtonian and self-taught painter. He received a degree in film from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1997. His background in film is evident in the strong use of narrative he employs to tell stories about characters and situations that do, have, and will exist; gently unmasking the psychological or emotional state of the subject, inviting the viewer to share and/or identify.

I am currently a student at The Art Institute of Washington, and while I've been there I have seen tremendous improvement in my abilities and knowledge. Just within a class period I can see the progress. It's amazing. Therefore, I think I should have an art show! I am very influenced by Japanese culture and music, so I hope most people can tell. Among the mediums I can use pretty well are: Acrylic Paint, Copic Sketch and Prismacolor Markers, Prismacolor Pencils, Graphite, Charcoal, Conte Crayon, Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, Fabric Paint, Rice Paper, Color Aid, and Watercolor.

My work is all about form and color. I concentrate on abstracting the human figure and letting each sculpture take shape and develop on its own. For this exhibit I am showing terra cotta sculptures; raku-fired clay forms and cold castings. At this point the process of discovery and learning is my focus.
I have a BFA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. My experience there was memorable -- excellent faculty and facilities -- a great way to start my journey into art. I live in Northern Virginia with my husband, Bill Firestone who is a fine art painter and illustrator.
This is my first time at Artomatic and I am looking forward to it. I'm on the sixth floor (I'm not in the published catalog) 6 SE C7

I've always loved the intricate patterns found in illuminated manuscripts, illustrated Korans, and Persian rugs. I created these images by going out in nature and taking photos specifically for use as raw material for my hand-crafted mandalas. Starting from one of my photographs, I “hand-craft” an image by choosing a “tile” of the photo to work into a finished image. In selecting the tiles, I try to choose colors, textures, and patterns that will result in an intriguing image, but I’m never quite sure where the process is taking me until the whole image coalesces.

The proliferation of digital media has made interesting photography achievable almost anywhere to anyone with a camera nowadays, and I am happy to be among the many thousands of digital artists extending that limitless frontier. Photography can encourage distant travel or simply provide for enjoyment of local surroundings, and my collection of efforts has stemmed from a desire to explore both of those approaches to this art form.

Much of my work examines the creation and subsequent passing of indicators of American identity, as well as American nostalgia for pasts that may or may not have ever existed. In 2008 I will be showing a series called "Road Trip" that investigates our sentimental feelings about the freedom of the open highway and the automobile, particularly at a time when highways are often clogged and gas prices are high enough to make us shudder at the thought of filling the tank.
