The DC Contact Jam will be performing "Clouds & Rain", a nine minute structured improvisation to a new improivised musical score composed by Steve Gorn, renowned Indian Bansuri flute player. Clouds & Rain uses the Mandala spatial structure developed by Barbara Dilley, one of the Judson Church post modern dance pioneers, as the "container" for the performance of contact improvisation by members of the DC Contact Improv Jam. Contact Improv solos and duets invoke the formation of clouds and the rain drops that quench the thirst of Mother Earth, supported by improvised music based on Indian Monsoon ragas.

This is my second year participating in ARTOMATIC. Last year I was the youngest participant.... let's see if I am again this year! My favorite colors are Red and Black and many of my pieces are those colors right now. I like to work with glass. I like sports.

Painting is a powerful language in which I express myself and communicate. The message within each painting is an illustrated element or aspect of my life. I paint the moments that capture me -- the beautiful and the painful -- for the exquisiteness of any moment can make me cry, and then I paint. Sketching and drawing are tools of my vocabulary with which I discover and reveal my thoughts and feelings, and when I forget that I am making art -- when I am purely communicating -- I am free.

For as long as I can imagine I've pursued the visual arts. Growing up, my passion was for fantasy. I loved Disney, and all animated movies that depicted my favorite fable, or fairy tale. I also had quite the imagination myself for mythical creatures.
In order to bring to life the images that danced in my head, I studied art in every way I could. This body of art exhibited here is the combination of years of study, my personal dreams/visions, and a continued dedication to the love of visual arts.

I am a lunar geologist by training and therefore spend most of my days thinking about the Moon and that clearly has a heavy influence on my artwork. In my paintings I try to convey the joy and wonder of space exploration and the stark beauty of these alien landscapes in contrast to our own beautiful planet.

I am fascinated by family traditions, stories, and memories that each of us conceal in our day-to-day experiences, and how much of our past affects our present.

In creating these paintings, drawings, and prints, many recurring symbols appear like my own recurring dreams.

Take a female bass player/songwriter/vocalist. Add a latin/jazz guitar player and a lively percussionist. What results is a new take on latin/bossa nova and swinging standards.

If you can imagine . . .
• sultry vocals with
• guitar work that feels like Joao Gilberto with lots of Django and a little Joe Pass plus
• lively percussion
You'll like NovaZanz.

Pete's vocals have been likened to Nina Simone, but there's a good bit of Astrud Gilberto mixed with subtle influences from all over the musical map -- from Elvis Presley to Ray Charles to Bonnie Raitt to Frank to Ella to Sarah. She also plays bass.

John is a self-taught guitarist. He spent many years studying Django Reinhardt, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery and many other great players. He plays against the melody line, weaving in and out with a separate voice that blends and transcends, yet never overpowers. He loves to play with changing the feel of songs using subtle dissonances.

John and Pete will be joined by Kirby Yarbrough on percussion. A veteran of numerous DC area bands, he brings a lively feel and some harmony singing as well.

When Simon Lancaster can't get a date with his dream girl Vanessa, his father puts out a hit on her faux-boyfriend Travis, but when all else fails, they call upon the Contigency 4, a group of less than great hitmen and what follows is a series of midadventures of misconception, cats and mormons.
