I have created art and gardens all my life, but not until I wanted sculpture for my own garden did I pursue creating metal art. In 2000, I was accepted at the Vermont Studio Center for a month long artist residency in sculpture. During my time among the Vermont mountains, I created over 20 pieces of artwork. I returned to Virginia to show my sculptures at such locations as the Arlington Ellipse Center, Arlington Arts Center, Brookside Gardens Conservatory and the National Botanic Garden at the foot of the U.S. Capitol.
Now with an established studio in West Virginia, I continue to create art in the mountain environment that I love. I construct my sculptures using steel, letting them rust naturally for a warm, soft glow not usually associated with industrial metal. Recently I have explored creating smaller sculptures to be displayed indoors and using unrusted steel combined with natural elements such as rocks and stones.
My art ranges in size from table-top pieces to over 6 feet of garden sculpture. I try to create motion, both real and imaged, with the garden sculptures. Each sculpture carries a little of my humor and much of the West Virginia Spirit.
