I welcome artomatic as an opportunity to show types of work I might not show elsewhere. When I heard about this year's event, I had one idea in mind, but when I came to see the space and found it raw and unfinished, I changed my mind completely. The idea for a take on the "Post no bills" construction wall came to mind, so this take on the sloppy tradition of "fly-posting" seemed ideal.
At about the same time I started working with a new camera called the "Blackbird Fly." It's a plastic camera or "toy camera" in the tradition of the wonderful Holga; cameras of this type produce "lo-fidelity" images that make a nice, analog alternative to the cold digital pixels that are ruling the photographic world today. But unlike the holga, this is a twin lens reflex and uses 35mm film. The user can opt to shoot the full frame of film, including sprocket holes and edge markings, as I have clearly done. This is the first 35mm plastic camera I've tried that has a satisfying effect.
I knew I wanted photos of urban-grit to accompany the fly-posting concept, and as the new images I was getting from this camera fit the bill, all of the images on my wall were generated within the last 6 weeks. It has come together as I intended; whether it actually works or not I cannot say. Please let me know what you think!
