Arrowroot Red Top detail c (full size)
Piano wire, aluminum sheet and acrylic ink
2006
Piano wire rusts lightly. Aluminum is light—the lighter the materials, the more sensitive the mobile is to air movement. Acrylic ink is translucent: Light reflects not only off the surface but off the underlying aluminum beneath, giving the panels a fluid texture.

Brass develops rich patinas as it ages, as the steel piano wire lightly rusts. Piano wire has a springy vitality delightful in a mobile. The brass is five-thousandths of an inch thick—the lighter the materials, the more sensitive the mobile is to air movements.
