It was in the streets of the Crescent city where she experienced the exotic and intoxicating nuances of “Carnival” that would help shape her artistic essence. Unafraid of vivid and imaginative colors, her paintings had the ability to reflect both the joys and pains of the city she loved. Her works included montages of masked performers, African folk dancers, Jazz singers, and the “Mardi Gras Indians”. All of these images, which were common place on the city streets of New Orleans, were brought to life once again by her imagination. Even the music itself seemed to float off the canvas as she experimented with different mediums, from clothing, to walls, even on floors. Debra’s artistic expressions could be expressed anywhere her heart could imagine. As her artistic talents grew so did her focuses. Debra began painting famous musicians, historical figures, and even dabbled in the abstract. Not only was she using brush strokes filled with beautiful colors, but she also began using physical objects to add depth to her paintings. She would use everything from broken records to broken glass to feathers. As far as Debra is concerned, with the right eye, an artist can turn anything into art. Debra has a passion for her art and a positive attitude with a caliber that is not often found. She will continue to paint the soulful images and radiant colors that make New Orleans what it is. Although she will never shy away from a new and challenging subject, she will always return to what she knows best. Although her travels have taken her far away and her mind to new and exciting places in both art and life, she left her heart in New Orleans and you can see it in almost everything she does. |
