Mixed Media (In More Ways Than One) Collage

Reporter by day, wannabe artist by night. Working on the wannabe.

My day job is to cover federal health policy for a D.C. publication, I spend most of my time roaming the Capitol building when Congress is in session. At night, I become M.K. McCARTHY (my artistic byline.)

I started taking art classes on a whim in 2007 when I first arrived in Washington. My first class was mixed media collage at the Smithsonian. My (awesome) teacher told me I was, despite my objections, an actual artist. I haven't looked back since.

I attended Artomatic in 2009 and vowed to have my own installation when the event came back to Washington. So here we are: my very first public art exhibit.

Artomatic 2012

This is my first public art exhibit.

I use mixed media collage to tell the story of my life at age 10, age 18, and age 26.

Each piece includes original documents from my life, including journal pages, notes from friends, prayer cards, pages from a half-used day planner, old business cards, awards, receipts, and everything in between.

I like to explore how the mundane, throwaway details can generate a picture of who we are and what influences shape our views.

Many thanks to everyone who encouraged me along this journey!
