Bhaavam/Raagam/Taalam – An Indian Dance Presentation – 5th Floor Cabaret

April 6 @ 3:30 pm - 4:15 pm

Free

Bhaavam/Raagam/Taalam reflects the 3 aspects that contribute to the South Indian classical dance form of bharatanatyam, being performed on this day. The two items being performed at times reflect bhaavam (emotion/expression), raagam (melody), taalam (rhythmic footwork) and frequently, some combination of the three.

In the first item, Chintayama Kanda, the composer describes the spiritual and physical being of Lord Shiva in this moment of devotion. In the same breath, he is described as an embodiment of eternal bliss and one with powerful lotus feet that can destroy empires. You will see depictions of his auspicious smile, his destruction of the God of Death, and the tall bull he rides.

The second item, Gummana Kareyadhire, is playful and light, depicting a young boy version of the notoriously mischievous Lord Krishna. The piece begins with an irritated mother, Yashoda, searching for her son, Krishna, who is found hiding behind a large pot. Once she threatens to call the fake scary monster, Gumma, to set him straight, a young Krishna says he will be good and begs his mother to please call off Gumma. “You know how I would tease the girls in the village? Never again! How I would steal butter? Not me! How I would jump into the lake where the monster lives to fight and defeat him? Nope, not me, never.” In the end, Yashoda is depicted watching her son making these promises, charmed by his boyish confidence. She ends by saying “you may be a supreme being, but never forget you are also my son!” She’s finally able to feed him the meal he has been evading.

This event is for all admirers of the performing arts and culture.
